Renaissance (1969)

First album of 1st generation Renaissance with ex-Yardbirds member Kieth Relf and Jim McCarthy.

They attempted to merge folk music and classical music. Melody and arrangement are old-fashioned.

D

Illusion (1971)

Second album of 1st generation Renaissance. Many members left the band during recording session.

B

Prologue (1971)

Rebirth of Renaissance with all new members. Piano sound in opening of the first song seems a fanfare of beginning of prog rock era.

A

Ashes are burning (1973)

Establishment of Renaissance sound with perfect merge of classical music and folk/ rock. Composition of first song Can You Understand? is superior featuring impressive piano solo and crystal voice of Annie Haslam.

The last song Ashes Are Burning is also wonderful with thrilling sound.

Songs between 2 songs are short and beautiful.

D

De Lane Lea Studios 1973

Live recording for BBC radio in 1973.

Sound is clear but sound sways sometimes. I feel discomfort this.

A

Turn of the cards (1974)

Sound became thicker, darker and more symphonic than the former album.

Maestoso of Mother Russia overwhelms us.

B

Academy of Music 1974

Live recording of concert at New York in May 1974. Songs from Ashes Are Burning and Turn of the Cards were performed with 24 piece orchestra.

(SACD)

A

Scheherazade & other stories (1975)

20 minutes suite Scheherazade features orchestra. Band sound and orchestra sound fuse completely. Very beautiful and dynamic. Other 3 short songs are also amazing.

A

Live at Carnegie hall (1976)

Live recording featuring New York Philharmonic. Song selection is perfect including full version of Scheherazade.

You can enjoy superb performance.

A

Novella (1977)

Including mysterious and magical songs which are never heard in the past albums. Introduction of opening song Can You Hear Me? is shocking.

Beauty of songs are like shining diamonds in a dark cave.

B

Song for all seasons (1978)

Mysterious atmosphere vanished. Light and bright songs which are rare in the past albums are included.

Song for all seasons featuring orchestra is dramatic.

Good album, but not enough for prog rock fans.

D

Azure d'or (1979)

Arrangement of songs have same approach as ever. But, songs are short and its melody is not good. Ordinary pop album.

D

Camera camera (1981)

Pianist/ keyboardist and drummer left the band. Renaissance is no longer prog rock band, but pop group.

I haven't listened this album.

D

Time-line (1983)

Pop album. I haven't listened this album.

B

Tuscany (2001)

Reunion of Renaissance. Bright songs with arrangement of classical music days are included.

Quality of song is good. However, I did not satisfied with Haslam's aged voice.

C

In the land of the rising sun: Live in Japan 2001 (2002)

Live recording after release of Tuscany (2CD).

Performance is superior, especially keyboard play which reproduced orchestra sound.

However, I did not satisfied with Haslam's aged voice.

Many songs from Annie's solo album were recorded, I wanted to listen Renaissance songs more.

A

Symphony of Light (2013)

Symphony of Light is 12 minutes dynamic symphonic suits.

The Mystic and The Muse is mysterious multimodal song and most exciting symphonic prog song in histroy of the band.

Harmony of John Wetton and Annie is very impressive In Blood Silver Like Moonlight.

B

Song of Scheherezade

Live footage of concert in May 1976 and July 1979.

Image is black and white and audio is mono. Quality of image and sound is not good. But, it is precious which recorded stage of their golden days.

For fanatic fan of Renaisance.
